# ChatGPT for Meta ads, with your approval.

ChatGPT can review Meta ads through Plainrouter’s OAuth connection. Sign up in Plainrouter, connect Meta and start with Read access.

## What can ChatGPT do with Meta ads?

ChatGPT can use the connected tools to read account context, retained performance, creative inventory and stored conversion-signal checks, then explain that evidence in a conversation. Check the reporting period and data sources.

Sign in to Plainrouter’s hosted MCP connection with OAuth and choose the active Meta ad account and Read or Write access on the consent screen. Start with reads before authorizing proposals.

With Write access and client support for the relevant tools, it can preview and propose pauses and resumes, eligible daily-budget changes and creative tests. New ad copies are created paused, and activation is a separate governed resume. See the [supported Meta agent workflows](/solutions/meta-ads-agent).

## How do I connect ChatGPT to Meta ads?

Connect ChatGPT on the web to Plainrouter’s custom MCP app with OAuth, using an eligible paid plan and developer mode. Availability and write-tool support depend on your plan and workspace settings; an administrator may need to enable custom apps.

Check [OpenAI’s current developer-mode guidance](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-developer-mode-and-full-mcp-connectors-in-chatgpt) before assuming every paid account exposes the same tools.

For a first look, create a custom MCP app with `https://plainrouter.com/mcp/sandbox` and **No Authentication**. Select it in the conversation and ask for account state. A successful result contains `sandbox: true`; the sandbox needs no Plainrouter account and never contacts Meta.

For production, sign up in Plainrouter and connect Meta, then add `https://plainrouter.com/mcp` with **OAuth**. Complete Plainrouter’s sign-in, select an active Meta ad account and choose Read access first. Select the app in your conversation, request an account read, and verify the intended workspace and account in the result.

ChatGPT’s connection uses sign-in rather than a pasted workspace key. Do not put a key into the chat or try to use Claude’s JSON configuration here. Follow [Plainrouter’s ChatGPT setup](/docs/mcp/overview#connect-chatgpt) for the current steps, and the [connection reference](/docs/mcp/setup) for transport and access boundaries.

## How do approvals work in ChatGPT?

A ChatGPT tool confirmation and a Plainrouter approval answer different questions: whether the client may call a tool, and whether a proposed Meta change may execute. Confirming a client tool call does not bypass Plainrouter’s policy or approve its proposal queue.

Read access cannot preview or propose Actions. To prepare supported changes, authorize Write access and choose Ask mode in Plainrouter. ChatGPT shows the tool result in its conversation; inspect whether it reports a proposal, a blocked action or a completed result. Review an Ask-mode proposal in Plainrouter’s Inbox rather than assuming a friendly “done” sentence proves execution.

Full mode queues policy-allowed changes automatically. Asking ChatGPT to “always wait for me” is not a substitute for selecting Ask mode. Plainrouter’s kill switch stops further changes, including queued work, but does not roll back previous executions. Use the decision receipt to separate approval, execution and verification.

## What can’t ChatGPT do through this connection?

The connection does not support audience creation, lifetime-budget changes or unrestricted access to [Meta’s Marketing API](/library/meta-ads-api). It cannot choose your offer or guarantee improved results.

OpenAI’s plan and administrator controls can also limit which MCP tools are available even when Plainrouter grants Write access.

A ChatGPT session is not a continuously running account monitor. Ask for the evidence you need in the current conversation and check the result’s timestamps. If the app is missing or the tool is unavailable, inspect developer mode, workspace permissions and the connection instead of asking ChatGPT to guess the account data.

## Worked example: compare counts in a chat

ChatGPT can compare synthetic conversion counts without requesting changes. Select the sandbox app and ask:

> Use the Plainrouter sandbox to compare its verified conversion count with Meta’s reported count. Give me the period and explain whether a difference proves lost sales. Do not request any changes.

The synthetic response reports `sandbox: true`, `gateway_verified: 1264`, `meta_reported: 1189`, `observed_gap: 75`, `alignment_percent: 94.1` and `marketing_api_called: false`.

The `get_performance` response identifies `data_source: "stored_reconciliation_reports"`; it does not fetch a fresh Meta report.

Ask ChatGPT to distinguish the returned fields from its interpretation. Those fictional counts demonstrate a reporting comparison, not your revenue, fresh Meta reporting or measured incrementality. A count gap alone does not establish lost sales. The sandbox cannot submit a proposal or exercise an approval flow, so this chat produces no real or pending ad changes.

## How does this differ from Meta’s official Ads MCP?

Plainrouter is a separate hosted connection with its own sign-in and approval workflow. Meta’s official Ads MCP is another option for Meta’s own tools; connecting one does not automatically configure the other.

Read the [Meta Ads MCP comparison](/library/meta-ads-mcp-options) before choosing the server that fits your workflow.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I connect without a Plainrouter account?

Yes, for the synthetic sandbox with No Authentication. Production uses Plainrouter OAuth sign-in and requires a connected active Meta ad account.

### Can I give ChatGPT read-only access?

Yes. Choose Read on Plainrouter’s consent screen. This permits account, creative and tracking reads, not Action previews or proposals.

### Does a ChatGPT confirmation approve the ad change?

No. It authorizes the client’s tool call. Ask mode still requires a person to approve the specific proposal in Plainrouter; Full mode follows workspace policy automatically.

### Is this included in my ChatGPT subscription?

Your ChatGPT plan and Plainrouter plan are separate. MCP is included on every Plainrouter plan, with no per-call metering; see [pricing](/pricing).
