# Facebook UTM parameters: add labels and check the landing URL

Facebook UTM parameters are labels added to an ad's destination URL so website analytics can identify its source, medium and campaign. Add them at the ad level in Meta Ads Manager's URL parameters field, then check the final landing URL and your analytics. They describe the clicked link; they do not prove a purchase or replace Meta's conversion reporting.

## What are UTM parameters on Facebook ads?

UTMs are named query-string values, such as ` utm_source=facebook `, attached to a destination URL. An analytics tool reads those labels when the visitor arrives.

A synthetic example is:

```text
https://example.com/pricing?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=example_launch&utm_content=example_video
```

The path still points to ` /pricing `. The text after ` ? ` supplies the labels, and ` & ` separates each key-value pair. Keep the values consistent across ads so one campaign does not appear as several differently spelled campaigns in reporting.

Meta says website analytics is needed to track the results of URL parameters. Adding labels to an ad does not install analytics, create a Purchase event or supply missing customer information to the Conversions API.

## Where do I add UTM parameters in Meta Ads Manager?

Meta's current instructions place URL parameters under **Tracking for the ad**, not in the campaign's name. You can enter the string yourself or use Build a URL parameter.

Follow the documented workflow:

1. Create an ad campaign or continue an existing draft in Ads Manager.
1. Complete the ad-creation steps until you reach Tracking at the ad level.
1. Enter the labels in URL parameters, or open Build a URL parameter.
1. Give every key a value and separate pairs with ` & `.
1. Apply the parameters and review the destination before publishing.

For the field, enter the parameter pairs rather than the full website address:

```text
utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=example_launch&utm_content=example_video
```

Meta says the field appends parameters to the Website URL. If the same key is present in both places, the URL parameters field overrides the duplicate in Website URL. Inspect both fields rather than assuming the destination's older value will win.

These field names and steps follow Meta's help instructions checked October 9, 2026. A label added to an ad promoting an existing post applies to its ad clicks, not automatically to organic clicks on that post.

## Which UTM values should I use for Facebook ads?

Choose a small, consistent naming convention before publishing. The following values are synthetic examples, not a required Meta naming standard.

| Parameter | Purpose | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ` utm_source ` | Identifies the referring platform | ` facebook ` |
| ` utm_medium ` | Identifies the marketing channel | ` paid_social ` |
| ` utm_campaign ` | Groups the campaign or promotion | ` example_launch ` |
| ` utm_content ` | Distinguishes a creative or link version | ` example_video ` |
| ` utm_id ` | Gives the campaign a stable identifier when your analytics uses one | ` example_campaign_104 ` |

Use lowercase labels with consistent spelling. Google Analytics treats differently capitalized values as different values; changing ` facebook ` to ` Facebook ` can fragment reporting. Keep one medium convention across comparable paid-social ads.

For Instagram, use a distinct source when you need platform-level reporting. Do not tag every placement ` facebook ` and then expect analytics to separate Facebook from Instagram. The source label says what you put into it.

` utm_term ` conventionally identifies paid keywords; it is not required to invent a keyword for a Facebook audience. Leave optional labels out when you have no clear reporting use for them. Keep email addresses, access tokens and other personal or secret values out of URLs.

Meta also says some campaign and ad identifiers may be added automatically to traffic, with separate behavior described for Shopify merchants. Check the final URL rather than assuming your manually supplied string is the complete query string.

## How are UTMs different from fbclid?

UTMs are campaign labels you choose; ` fbclid ` is a click identifier Meta adds to an ad-click URL. They serve different purposes and can appear together.

Do not use a UTM campaign value as a replacement for ` fbclid `, or rewrite a genuine click ID into lowercase. Meta says its ClickID is case-sensitive. The [fbp, fbc and fbclid guide](</library/fbp-fbc>) explains how that click value relates to Meta's browser cookies and Conversions API fields.

Google's [GCLID](</library/gclid>) is another platform's click identifier. It is useful to understand the distinction, but it does not belong in a Facebook click-ID field.

## What breaks when I add UTM parameters?

Exact-match conversion rules and redirects that drop the query string are two things to check. A correctly tagged ad can still lead to an untagged page or a conversion rule that no longer matches.

### Why can a URL Equals rule stop counting?

Meta explicitly warns that URL Equals requires an exact match. Added UTM parameters, a protocol difference or an extra trailing slash can stop the URL matching the custom-conversion rule.

Its recommended alternative is URL Contains with the shortest portion that uniquely identifies the intended page. Choose that portion carefully: ` /complete ` should not also match a different page that happens to contain the same text. Check the full rule in [Events Manager](</library/meta-events-manager>), including which event it filters.

### Can a redirect remove the labels?

Yes, a site's redirect can send the visitor to a new URL without retaining the original query string. Check the final address after every redirect, including a change from one domain or locale to another.

Also inspect duplicate keys and empty values. Meta's instructions say to supply a value or remove the parameter. A copied template with an empty campaign label does not become a useful campaign record simply because it is syntactically attached to a URL.

## How do I check that the parameters work?

Open the ad preview and inspect its destination, then verify a controlled visit in your analytics. Keep a URL check separate from creating a conversion or claiming ad attribution.

Record three things: the parameter string saved on the ad, the final landing URL and the campaign labels recorded by analytics. If they differ, investigate the point where the value changed. A field override is a different problem from a redirect dropping parameters.

Some analytics reports group UTM information into traffic-source dimensions instead of showing it in a page-path dimension. In Google Analytics, inspect the relevant source, medium and campaign fields rather than concluding the labels disappeared because one URL report omits them.

You can compare the workflow with [Google Ads tracking templates](</library/google-ads-tracking-template>), but those platform-specific templates are not Meta's URL parameters field. For browser conversion setup itself, use the [Meta Pixel guide](</library/meta-pixel>).

## Frequently asked questions

### Do Facebook ads need UTM parameters?

Use them when you need consistent campaign labels in website analytics. They do not replace the Pixel, Conversions API or Meta's own reporting.

### Can I add UTMs to an existing Facebook post ad?

Meta supports parameters on ads promoting existing posts. Its help page says those parameters apply to ad URL clicks, rather than organic clicks on the post.

### Should I use facebook or meta as utm\_source?

Choose a documented convention and use it consistently. Use distinct sources when you need to separate Facebook and Instagram; changing names midstream changes your reporting labels.

### Why are my Facebook UTM values missing from analytics?

Check the final URL, duplicate keys, empty values and whether your analytics collected the visit. Then inspect the report's source dimensions; a page-path report may not expose campaign parameters.
