# 4 server-side tracking tools compared: costs and setup

**Shortlist Stape or TAGGRS if you want to operate server-side Google Tag Manager. Consider Tracklution for managed delivery to several advertising platforms, and Plainrouter for Meta Pixel and Conversions API with delivery diagnostics.** For Meta without GTM, also compare the dedicated Gateways from Stape and TAGGRS.

The deciding question is what your team wants to maintain: a configurable tag container, a managed connector, or an application integration. If you already use Segment or RudderStack, check that pipeline before buying another tool.

## What do these tools cost?

These are entry points, not quotes for an identical workload. Annual subscriptions are marked explicitly; currencies are left as published. Check the linked plans for current terms and any applicable taxes or extra services.

Requests, events, arrivals, and attributed conversions are different counts. Do not divide these prices by the largest number in the table and call the result the cheapest tool. Include configuration time, extra sites, required connectors, and ongoing debugging in your estimate.

Plainrouter's band uses the **previous calendar month's observed spend from connected ad-platform accounts, currently Meta**, and is billed in arrears. Arrival overage is €1 per additional 5,000 arrivals, with partial blocks rounded up. Conversions do not count as arrivals. ## 1. Stape: configurable hosting or a dedicated Gateway

**Choose Stape server GTM when someone on your team owns tags and event mappings.** It provides the hosting layer for a server container. Your configuration determines where events go and how fields are transformed. [Server GTM hosting](https://stape.io/gtm-server-hosting).

For a narrower Meta requirement, evaluate its separate CAPI Gateway. Stape documents that Gateway events depend on the existing web Pixel: new events must first be configured there. That is a material distinction if your requirement is a backend-only subscription renewal or confirmed payment. Its Meta Gateway does not also deliver to Google Ads or TikTok. **Check before choosing:** whether you need the tag-container product or the Gateway, how your business event reaches it, and who fixes mappings when the site changes.

## 2. TAGGRS: GTM templates and monitoring, with a Meta-only alternative

**Shortlist TAGGRS when you want a GTM workflow with provider templates and request monitoring.** Compare the included diagnostics and your existing data layer against the actual hosting plan. **Check before choosing:** whether your needs stop at Meta, whether the template covers your event, and what implementation help is included beyond hosting.

## 3. Tracklution: managed advertising connectors

**Start with Tracklution when you want supported connectors without operating a server GTM container.** It documents installation through supported platforms such as Shopify and WooCommerce, alongside an option for existing GTM users. Its free plan includes Meta and Google Ads connectors; Grow lists all connectors, including destinations beyond those two. **Check before choosing:** whether your specific source, destination, and event fields are supported on the selected plan. A managed connection still needs a correct purchase or lead signal from your site. Verify API access separately if you plan to build a custom backend integration; it is not the same thing as using a built-in connector.

## 4. Plainrouter: Meta signal delivery and debugging

**Choose Plainrouter when your immediate problem is understanding what reaches Meta.** Signals brings together first-party website collection, server conversions, capture-time consent, and matching Pixel/CAPI event names and IDs. **Check before choosing:** that Meta is the destination you need, your application can provide the event and consent inputs, and the spend-based band fits your business. Google Ads and TikTok delivery are not part of this recommendation.

Use the [Signals setup guide](https://plainrouter.com/docs/signals/overview) to establish collection, then follow one confirmed conversion through the delivery evidence. Acceptance by Meta does not mean Meta attributed that conversion to an ad.

## Can you use server-side tracking without GTM?

Yes. The options above include dedicated Meta Gateways, managed platform connectors, and Plainrouter's browser/API integration. A direct destination API is another option when your team wants to own the delivery code.

Choose around the event source. A supported storefront connector may cover a purchase without custom code. A payment confirmed on your backend needs a path from that backend; do not assume a browser-dependent Gateway captures it automatically. Direct API work also leaves your team responsible for credentials, retries, field mapping, and destination changes.

## Already using Segment or RudderStack?

Start by checking the pipeline you already operate. Segment documents a server-source route to Facebook Conversions API. RudderStack provides event collection, transformations, and destination routing. An existing customer data platform may therefore be the better place to evaluate the connection before adding another collection layer. Confirm the exact destination, plan entitlement, event fields, and consent handling. Keep one owner for each event's delivery path. Adding a second connector without coordinating event identity can make troubleshooting harder.

## How to validate your shortlist

Use the same known purchase or lead for each candidate. Write down its event identity, value, currency, destination, and expected consent behavior. Then check:

1. **Collection:** the intended source emits the correct business event.
2. **Permission:** granted, declined, and withdrawn consent produce the intended handling.
3. **Delivery:** you can distinguish collection from destination acceptance and failure.
4. **Duplicates:** browser/server overlap and retries preserve the intended event identity.
5. **Maintenance:** someone owns mapping changes and understands what increases the bill.
